Which New England Home Style is Right for you?

New England’s rich history can be seen throughout its various home styles. New England’s historic homes paint a picture of the past and are some of the most charming homes available. Home styles depend on the era they were built and the area they were built in. It is important to understand the various home styles to choose a house that meets your needs. Below are some home styles that are common in New England.

Cape Cod

The Cape Cod style is typically simple, symmetrical and small. There is usually a large central chimney and a steep roof. It was named after Cape Cod in Massachusetts, a popular coastal region where this home style is quite common. If you are looking for a simple home and have a small family, this style could work well for you.

Colonial

The Colonial style usually has two or three stories. It is a symmetrical style with a traditional aesthetic. There are many regional variations within the Colonial home style. In New England, it is more common to have a clapboard or brick exterior compared to stucco in warmer regions. This home style is a great option for a larger family who values the historical charm of New England.

Victorian

Victorian styles reflect a style that was popular during the Queen Victoria era. They are typically large with an asymmetrical shape. They are painted, colorful and decorative. Some Victorian homes have round or octagonal towers. On the more expensive side, this style may be a good option for a large family who values intricate architecture and historical charm.

Split-Level

The Split-Level style is a newer style and features multiple floors with a short staircase between each floor. They typically have a low-pitched roof, are asymmetrical and have an integrated garage. This style could work well for someone who wants a decent home in New England without paying for historical charm.
